Roger Phillips has been training retrievers for just over twenty years. His kennel prefix is ‘LAKEDOWN’. In this time he has been successful making up three Field Trial Champions. He made up the very first retriever he ever trained, ‘Field Trial Champion Monty of the Lake’. He then made up his second ‘Field Trial Champion Lakedown Sedge’, which he also bred.

He then decided to set himself targets, being the first champion he made up he had bought, then the second he made up he bred being a male, now he decided he would like to make a female up to Field Trial Champion, which he did last year with ‘Field Trial Champion Connemarra Twinkle of Lakedown (Ruby)’. He has now a new target - he would like to make a yellow retriever up to Field Trial Champion. He has two yellow pups at the moment which has bred out of Ruby.

Roger is the first Welsh handler ever to win the Top International Dog and Handler award at the CLA Game Fair in Scotland in 1991, with a bitch called ‘Lakedown Lillibutt’. This has only ever been achieved twice since.

He has represented the Welsh International Gundog Team numerous times at the CLA Game Fair and at Sherbourne Castle. The last time that that CLA Game Fair was held at Blenheim Palace in 2004, he was one of the international retriever judges. He has also judged the World International Retriever Event at Sherbourne Castle. He has in the past also been nominated to judge the Retriever Championship.
Roger was a member of this year's 2009 victorious Welsh International Retriever Team to win the SKINNERS Retriever World Cup at Highclere Castle; Wales also being the country to win this event three times.

He has exported pups and working retrievers to many parts of Europe. He has also travelled to many parts of Europe to take training seminars and to judge field trials and international tests. He is a ‘A-Panel’ retriever judge with the Kennel Club. He has also judged the Belgium Retriever Championship.

This year (2009) he has judged the Himmel Cup in Switzerland, the International Working Test in Holland, a Working Test in Nuremberg and has also taken a training seminar in Sweden.
